Hi, I’m SUBHAMOY BHATTACHARJEE, I’m from India’s North-East – an amazing land of many contradictions.

I tell the tale of my incredible land, with words and images.
It’s a magnificently picturesque region brimming with abundant natural and diverse cultural resources. The mighty Brahmaputra – ‘Tsangpo’ in neighbouring Tibet – and other rivers add to its splendour and provide sustenance to millions for most of the year.

Writing, Travelling and photography have been my passions since childhood. Later, I combined the skills while working for some dailies and periodicals in the 1990s.

Sometime in late-1990s, I realized that pictures are more powerful than words and that dragged me to nurture my passion into profession by exploring the field of Photojournalism and documentary photography.

  • I did my specialisation in Photography from Jadavpur University, Kolkata (www.jaduniv.edu.in/) and photojournalism from Indiana University USA (www.indiana.edu) with an M.A. in Mass Communication from Tezpur University (www.tezuernet.in ) that strengthen my skill in pursuing the visual medium of communication to tell people’s stories to the world.
  • After completing the Video Photography & Editing course at EDC Cell of Cotton College (https://cottonuniversity.ac.in/) supported by the Department of Science & Technology (GOI), I did my specialisation in Video Journalism at www.rosenbloomtv.com in USA.
  • I was attached with www.bbc.com and www.indianexpress.com as a photojournalist before joining The Seven Sisters Post as Photo Editor in the year 2011 served till 2013.
  • My photographs have been publishing in Indian national newspapers ie. The Indian Express, The Hindu, The Deccan Herald, The Telegraph, Anandabazar Patrika, The Assam Tribune, The Seven Sisters Post, Samayeek Prasanga, Dainik Jugashankha along with the magazines like OUTLOOK, TEHELKA, DOWN TO EARTH, OUTLOOK TRAVELLER, HARMONY, SANCTUARY ASIA, etc.
  • My picture stories have been featured in www.bbc.co.uk, www.time.com, www.atlasobscura.com, www.thenewsmill.com with latest visual stories from northeast India apart from my contribution to The Indianapolis Star in Indiana (USA) and Der Spiegel (German Magazine) and many other international publications.
  • My attachment to book projects led to the National Geographic- “Holidays around the World”, Troubled Periphery-The Crisis of India’s North East by SAGE, The Braided River by HARPER COLLINS, The Darjeeling Tea Book by PENGUINE INDIA along with special assignment of the Book cover of the 33rd National Games of India etc.
  • I have participated in a “Workshop on Strengthening Media Professionalism and the NGO-Media Interface in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka for HIV/AIDS Coverage” under a joint programme organized by Indiana University and Southern Illinois University in USA in June-July 2008.
  • I worked as a co-producer of “India in A Day”, India’s first crowd sourced feature film in 2016 by https://www.youtube.com/c/GoogleIndia.
  • My images of Global Hand Washing event appeared in the www.unicef.org Calendar in India.
  • Explored the field of Wildlife Conservation Communication as a Communication Manager of www.wti.org.in serving in northeast India till 2021.
  • As Master Trainer in photography from IIE, I have trained thirty (30) young entrepreneurs of Assam to develop a sustainable photography business under the initiative of Ministry of MSME (GOI) and conducted by Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (https://iie.gov.in/) in the year 2013.
  • I am presently attached with Women’s College Shillong in Meghalaya as a Guest Faculty in Photography under Skills Hub programme started in 2021.
  • I teach the art and science of photography through a specially designed Photography Learning Project named IMAGE HUT (https://www.subhamoy.in/image-hut/).
  • Being a Freelance Photographer and Writer, I am available for Photography and Videography assignments in the field of Documentary Photography, Nature & Wildlife Conservation Photography, Corporate & Industrial Photography, Book projects and Editorial Photo Features.
